Sudbury's Science North rips out giant pumpkin competitors

One of the most difficult parts of growing giant pumpkins is thinning the plants to allow for just one or two giant pumpkins to grow, as one local gardener will attest.

One of the most difficult parts of growing giant pumpkins is thinningthe plants to allow for justone or two giant pumpkins to grow, as one local gardener will attest.

On Monday, Science North staff scientist Stephen Smith thinned theMorning NorthandScience Northpumpkin plants. Now, both CBC Sudbury and Science North will root forone plant, hoping it will produce the largest pumpkin.

"That really hurts," said Smith as he yanked one of the smaller pumpkin plants from the ground. "You can hear it pulling and ripping a lot of root growth."
