The Sudbury Theatre Centreannounced yesterday that David Savoy will be leaving after five years at the helm. Savoy's multiple sclerosis was cited as the reason for his retirement.

The president of the Board of Directors for the STC said Savoy brought a lot of dedication to the role.

David did a tremendous job with our organization, with our theatre centre, Brian Koivu said.

His ability and his willingness to engage our audience night after night [was] quite unprecedented, I think, for artistic directors to be present at almost every production.

Savoy was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 12 years ago.

He said the disease has progressed in the last couple of years, leading to the difficult decision to retire.

I haven't broken down and had a good cry yet, he said. I'm sure that will come. I really don't know what the next chapter of my life is going to be. The only thing I know is that it's not going to be here at STC and that is really hard and really saddening.

The Sudbury Theatre Centre said the search will start shortly for a new artistic director.

No interim director has been named in his place.
