Winter weather forces road closures, flight delays

Wild and wicked winter-like weather has shut down a main artery south of Sudbury for part of the day Friday.

OPP Inspector Mark Andrews said Hwy 69 was closed Friday, from Sudbury city limit south to Point Au Baril, after conditions in the northeast and to the south deteriorated throughout the morning.

"The road conditions are treacherous," he said.

The highway was reopened in the afternoon.

Andrews noted OPP are eyeing Hwy 17 for closure next, but intermittent closures were expected throughout the day.

"We are asking people if you don't have to travel, don't travel because the conditions that you are looking out your window are the same as Highway 11, 17, our major routes and our secondary highways," he said.

With bad weather battering our residents to the south, several flights to and from Toronto were delayed or cancelled at the Sudbury airport.

Anyone with travel plans was advised to check with their carrier.
