Orange barricades on South Algoma St. to be replaced

Orange barricades erected along a section of Thunder Bay's South Algoma St. have been targeted for replacement by the city's Clean, Green and Beautiful committee.

Councillor Rebecca Johnson, who is also the chair of the committee,said that members have been discussing options that could potentially be put into action in the summer.

"We decided that we would come back and take a look at that, because we need to remove those orange barricades. They look terrible. We knew that and so it was a case of let's go back and figure out what we could put in there," she said.

Johnson said that one option is to replace the barricades with movable planters.

"We're going to be removing the barricades for this summer with a temporary change in looking at what we can do. Wehad talked at a previous meeting and with some administration people that maybe we would put in some temporary flower baskets of some kind," said Johnson.

According to Johnson there is "a little bit of a budget left" for the committee to use toward this project.

The city's engineering division is working on more appropriate and permanent street furnishings but, they said, replacement may not be made until fall.

The decision on the planters is scheduled to be made on June 19 during the committee's next monthly meeting.
