Thunder Bay police target rail crossings

Thunder Bay police will team up with railway police on a traffic enforcement project to target vehicles running through rail crossings when the warning lights are already activated.

Police report both CN and CP have identified it as a big problem in Thunder Bay.

Sergeant Glenn Porter said they will work together in the coming weeks to put a stop to the dangerous practice.

We've done a little bit of brainstorming and I think that you might be surprised at some of the techniques that might be employed in the next little while, he said.

Porter said the enforcement blitz was in the works before the accident in Ottawa, but that tragedy has reinforced why it's necessary.

Anybody who is foolishly trying to beat that train is not only putting themselves at risk, but they're putting the crew of the train at risk, Porter said.

If red signal lights are activated, drivers must come to a stop, he said.
