Thunder Bay residents want answers on sewage plant woes

Homeowners who suffered losses in the May flood will find out at a Monday night council meeting why Thunder Bay's sewage plant was unable to handle the surplus water.

Citizens hoping for information from officials, despite lawsuits being launched against the city

Homeowners who suffered losses in Mays flood will find out at a Monday night council meeting why Thunder Bay's sewage plant was unable to handle the surplus water. City council is expected toreceive reports from experts who looked into the disaster.

People like Valerie Cameron say theyve waited a long time to hear the report on exactly what went wrong on May 28. Cameron is with a group of concerned Northwood residents who banded together after many residents of the neighbourhood as well as the East End and Intercity were left to cope with sewage after it backed up into their basements.

Cameron said she feels property owners have a right to know what happened, despite legal action the city is facing.

"Given that there are current lawsuits we're hoping that the transparency can still occur so that we, as taxpayers, are aware of some of the issues that occurred at the plant," she said.

City council will hear from a meteorologist who will review the weather events that led up to the flooding. An engineer is also expected to give a presentation on how to prevent the sewage plant from flooding again.

Cameron said she hopes homeowners don't have to experience that kind of flooding in their homes again.

"We're going to have more rainstorms weather patterns are changing," she said.

"And so, this is our opportunity on a go-forward basis to finally correct some of our issues."
