Vandalized century-old tree gets new life

Wood from a heritage tree cut down by a vandal at Boulevard Lake last year will be used in a public art competition.

Wood from a heritage tree cut down by a vandal at Boulevard Lake last year will be used in a public art competition.

The felled white pine was removed by the Thunder Bay city workers and the wood is now being offered for artists to use. (Supplied)

Thunder Bays parks division was able to salvage three large logs from the 100-year-old white pine.

The city said it would saw one of those logs into lumber on Tuesday.The lumber and the remaining logs will be offered to local artists who submit the best ideas for honouring the landmark tree.

Members of the community were shocked and dismayed by the act of mischief after it was discovered the tree had been cut downwitha chain saw inJune2011.
