Police shoot pit bull after it grabs child by throat, inflicts multiple bites

A dog has been shot dead by police after it grabbed a child by the throat and inflicted several bites during an attack in Scarboroughearly Wednesday evening.

Toronto police were called tothe Conlins Road and Good Road area, which is near Morningside and Highway 401, around 6 p.m. for reports that a doghad attacked a child and would not let go.

Police responded to the scene and found the dog, which officers believed to be a pit bull,still holding the child, Const. DavidHopkinsontold CBC News Wednesday evening.

Officers tried to get the dog off and one officer suffered minor injuries in the scuffle, he said.One officer shot and killedthe dog, he said.

Paramedics said whenthey were called to the scene they found a child with multiple bites to the body. The childwas taken to a local hospital suffering from serious but non-life-threateninginjuries.
