A woman is dead and a man is in hospital with critical injuries after a residentialfire in Toronto's west end early Wednesday, according to the city's fire chief and paramedics.

A woman is dead and a man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after an overnight fire near College and Dufferin streets. CBC's Ali Chiasson has more on the investigation.

A woman is dead and a man is in hospital with critical injuries after a residentialfire in Toronto's west end early Wednesday, according to the city's fire chief and paramedics.

Crews responded to the fire just after midnight on RusholmeRoad north of College Streetin Dufferin Grove, Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Toronto paramedics said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire andthree additional adults were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Pegg said the man and woman were found during a search of the residence and immediately turned over to paramedics.

"I extend our deepest condolences to family, friends and all those impacted by this tragic incident," Pegg said in his post.

He said the fire has been extinguished. Fire investigators will now work with Toronto police and theOntario's Office of the Fire Marshal to investigate its cause, Pegg added.

Toronto police sayall unexplained or sudden deaths are treated as suspicious until the cause of death is known. They say the homicide unit has been made aware of the situation, but isn't currently investigating.

Coun. AlejandraBravo, who represents the area, expressed condolences to the family of the woman who died in a post on social media.

"I appreciate the work of the brave firefighters at[Toronto fire]who responded to this emergency," Bravo said.
