1 dead in Scarborough highrise fire, police say

One person is dead after a fire in a Scarborough residential highrise building on Tuesday night, Toronto police say.

One person is dead after a fire in a Scarborough residential highrise building on Tuesday night, emergency services say.

The blazebroke out in aninth-floor unit in thebuilding onBridletowne Circle, near Warden Avenue and Finch Avenue E., at about 8:30 p.m., according to Toronto Fire Services.

The fire was brought under control by 10 p.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Larry Cocco said the person who died was found inside the unit.

Crews were able to contain much of the damage to the single apartment, though some adjacent units may have been damaged by water, Cocco said.

It is too early to say what may have caused the fire, Cocco added, though there was no immediate evidence of any "foul play."

Toronto Fire will investigate the blaze alongside police and the Ontario Fire Marshal, Cocco said.
