Gardiner Expressway concrete falls near Don Valley Parkway

Mayor John Tory said he's concerned with the growing number of reports of falling concrete from the Gardiner Expressway after another incident Monday morning.

Police and city crews shut down one lane of traffic after more concrete fell from the Gardiner Expressway around 9 a.m. on Monday.Toronto police said the concrete appears to have fallen near the area where the eastbound Gardiner splits into the northbound Don Valley Parkway and eastbound Lake Shore Blvd.

Police tweeted the concrete fell from the eastboundGardineronto the westboundGardiner.

A CBC manager driving on the westboundGardineraround 9 a.m. reported seeing "very large chunks of concrete" on the roadway.

"Immediately, Transportation Services conducted a site inspection and began chipping operations to remove any loose concrete at this location," Tory said in a statement.

"Public safety must be paramount," Torys statement continued. "I have asked city staff to look at additional measures, including possible methods of containing or reinforcing vulnerable parts of the Gardiner, to make it safer."

Tory said he's asked for staff to report specifics surrounding the incident in the coming weeks.

The left lane of the eastbound Gardiner will be closed as city crews clean up.

Concrete falling from the expressway has been a recurring issue for the city. At the end of February, CBC Toronto spoke with one woman whose windshield was smashed by falling concrete.

At the time, city officials gave assurances that the elevated highwayis structurally sound.
