'Growling' coyote reportedly approaches Oakville high school students

Halton Regional Police are warning Oakville residents to be on the lookout after a report of a growling coyote approachinga group ofhigh school students.

Students fromOakville Trafalgar High Schoolreported the incident on Tuesday.

The high school, along withMaple Grove Public school andNew Central Public school, sent letters home with students to parents warning them about recent coyote sightings.

"They are typically shy animals who are looking for food or garbage," the letter said. It also warns about the dangers of feeding the animals.

"Coyotes intentionally fed by people will lose their fear of humans and may develop aggressive behaviour."

In the letter, the schoolassured parents the following precautions have been taken:

• Staff members have been advised to be watchful during outdoor activities.
• Students have been told not to approach strange animals and to tell the school if one hasbeen seen.
• Students are reminded not to take any food outside during nutrition breaks.

Police say daytime sightings of coyotes have increased in eastOakvillebetweenTrafalgarRoad and Ford Drive.

If you spot a coyote, police want you to report the incident immediately, and they do notwant you to approach or feed the animal.

The Town of Oakville is hosting a coyote information night on January 20 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mildred's Lightbourn School.

Town representatives and Halton Regional Police will be in attendance to answer any questions or concerns.
