'To know you was to love you': Mother of Brampton shooting victim Kadeem Bascombe speaks out

The mother of a 24-year-old Mississauga man shot at the scene of a Brampton bar on Friday says Kadeem Bascombe had a smile that could light up a room.

'I know you will always be watching out for us. You will always be in our hearts.'

The motherof a24-year-old Mississauga manshot at the scene of a Brampton bar on Friday says Kadeem Bascombe had a smile that could light up a room.

"Kadeem, You are not only my son, but also my protector and friend," Bascombe's mother, Lois Williamson,wrote in a statement emailedto CBC NewsSunday.

"You have a smile that lights a room and you have always been a kind and giving person," the statement continues. "I have been truly blessed to be your mother. To know you was to love you, and we all do."

CBC News spoke withBascombe'ssister,QadiraaStephen,on Sunday, who said his entirefamily is grieving.Stephen also confirmed aFacebookaccount belonging to her brother and provided the following photos.

"Although you are no longer here in the physical, I truly know that you have not and will never leave us," Bascombe's mother continued. (Qadiraa Stephen)

Const. Rachel Gibbs, with the Peel Regional Police, said they receivedseveral callsabout gunshots nearLisa Street and Dixie RoadFriday night at 9 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, theparking of anAll Stars Bar and Grill, they found the victimin critical condition.

Supt. Steve Walker fromPeel paramedicstoldCBC News Friday evening that the victimsuffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

On Saturday, police appealed to the public for help with the investigation, hopingto speak to any witnesses who were in the area ofDixie Road and Queen Street East inBramptonat the time of the shooting.

On Sunday afternoon, a friend set up a GoFundMe page to help Bascombe's family with costs.

"I'm asking anyone out there that wants to help the family through this tough timeplease do so and donate anything you can.#stopgunviolence," the friend wrote.
