'Suspicious package' at Air Canada Centre was plastic replica grenade: police

Toronto police nowsaya "suspicious package" they detonated in front of the Air Canada CentreFriday eveningwas a plastic replica grenade.

The incident closeda large portion of Maple Leaf Square at Bremner Boulevard and York Street,and also caused pedestrian traffic to be diverted. The area has since reopened.

The investigation also restricted access to gates fiveand six and took place as the Raptorsplayedthe Dallas Mavericks at the Air Canada Centre.

Police told CBC Toronto that they received a call about the suspicious packagebefore 6 p.m. and were attempting to resolve the situation before the start of the game.

The police's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Explosives (CBRNE) team was on scene. Firefighters and ambulances were alsoon scene.

The plastic grenade wasamong foursuspicious packages Toronto police reported today.

Police say that a package they found ata business at Bay and Front streets Friday afternoon contained an "unidentified powdery substance" but no injuries were reported.

Also Friday afternoon, policewere unable to locate a package that was reported atSheppard Avenue and Bonnington Place.

After the incident at Maple Leaf Square, police and the CBRNEteam responded to another report of a suspicious packageBlue Jays Way andNorthern Linear Trail. It was reported thatan "unfamiliar blue bin" was on the property. The scene is now clear.
