Mississauga doctor Carlo Meola facing fraud charges: OPP

OPP health-fraud investigation unit got involved after the provincial health ministry began receiving complaints about patients being unnecessarily referred to doctors at the clinic.

Police anti-rackets squad calls investigation into AIMS Multi Specialty Clinic "complex"

A Mississauga doctor is facing fraud chargesafter an investigation by Ontario Provincial Police.

The OPP anti-rackets branchsays the investigation centred onthe AIMSMultispecialty Clinic.

The provincial health ministry referred the case totheOPP'shealth-fraud investigation unitafter it receivedcomplaints about patients being unnecessarilyreferred to doctors at the clinic.

Dr. Carlo Meola, 59, is charged with fraud over $5,000.

Police did not estimate a value of the fraud other than todescribe it as "significant" and to say it had been occurringregularly.

Meola appears on the College of Physicans and Surgeons of Ontario public registeras practicing at an addresson Queensway near Hurontarioin Mississauga, listed as theMulti-Specialty Walk-In Clinic.

Meola is scheduled to appear in court on Mar. 1.
