Woman dead after fire at home in North York

A woman died in a fire at a home in North York early Saturday morning, police and fire officials say.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a house fire in the area of Finch Avenue W. and Grantbrook Street shortly after 6:30 a.m., Toronto Fire acting platoon chief Godfrey Greavestold reporters.

Firefighters encountered "heavy smoke and flames" coming from the second floor of a home, Greaves said.

Five occupants were outside the home when fire crews arrived, and they told the firefighters a sixth occupant was "potentially" still inside.

Firefighters entered the home and rescued a woman who was "approximately" 65 years old, Greaves said, but despite life-saving measures being performed, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The blaze has since been put out, according to fire officials.Toronto Fire investigators and Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal are investigating the cause and the origins of the fire.

"[The fire] was concentrated within the room that we found the occupantin, and that is going to be the room that we focus our investigations on," Greaves said.
