Halton police were called to a home on Yarmouth Crescent shortly after noon for reports that the elderly woman and toddler were face down in the family in-ground pool.

Police say the child regained consciousness before police arrived, and was taken to McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton for treatment.

"I'm just shocked," neighbour Niki Philippios told CBC News. "She just celebrated her fourth birthday ... Who knows what could have happened?"

Police say the coroner will be investigating ifa medical episode might have contributed to the woman's death.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this tragic incident at this time," police said in a news release.

Neither police nor the coroner are providing any other details, but the force is reminding the public that children should always wear proper floatation devices near pools or other bodies of water.

Police also are advising parents to make surethat "adults of vulnerable stature are capable of supervising young children in such environments."
