City councillor supports safety review of cycling path where boy, 5, was struck and killed

A Toronto city councillor says he would support a safety review of the cycling path along Lake Shore Boulevard in the wake of a 5-year-old boy's death there Wednesday night.

The child was killed after he was struck by a car while riding his bicyclenear Jameson Avenue shortly before 6:15 p.m. Police said the boy's bike shot forward and then he fell onto the road.

He was then hit by a silver Toyota Camry.

Coun. MikeLayton, who representsWard 19 TrinitySpadina, said the city needs to consider if it can do more to protect people there. He said that he biked along that stretch about two weeks ago and was concerned at the speed of the cars moving next to the cyclists.

"Idon't know if it's barriers that are the best thing or if there's another option, but we do need to look at safety along that corridor," Layton said.

He said that it's said it's up to the local councillor to look at safety options in this case, Coun. Gord Perks which would likely includea public consultation.

Perks representsWard 14 ParkdaleHigh Park, where the accident occurred. On Thursday, he said he's still trying to learn exactly what led up to the collision.

That investigation is still continuing, city transportation spokesmanSteve Johnston said.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the young boy who was tragically killed."
