Snow squall warnings across central Ontario

Environment Canada has placed a stretch of central Ontario from Grey-Bruce east to Peterborough-Kawartha lakes under a snow squall warning.

It says a band covering Grey County to southwest of Lake Simcoe is forecast to deliver some of the worst conditions, with snowfall of up to 10 cm an hour, winds reaching 70 km/h and "blizzard-like" conditions in exposed spots.

The snow squalls are expected to weaken through Wednesday but the forecast says stronger squalls should return that night.

Snow squalls forced the city of Barrie, Ont., to cancel all programming at its recreational centres Tuesday night.

And provincial police warn that blowing snow has resulted in zero visibility on Highway 400 north of Highway 89, the main road into the city.

They also sent out notice suggesting everyone stay off the roads due to white-out conditions reported in all of the regions the force patrols.
