Rohinie Bisesar, accused in Shoppers Drug Mart stabbing, 'seems really sad'

The woman accused of committing an unprovoked stabbing in Toronto's financial district that left another woman with critical injuries "seems really sad" her lawyer said, following a brief court appearance on Wednesday morning.

The woman accused of committing an unprovoked stabbing in Toronto's financial district that left another woman with critical injuries "seems really sad" her lawyer said, following a brief court appearance on Wednesday morning.

Rohinie Bisesar, 40, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, days after the shocking Friday attack at a Shopper's Drug Mart. Police allege Bisesar brought a knife into the store, then proceeded to stab the victim, who she didn't know.

Calvin Barry, her lawyer, told reporters "she seems really sad," but wouldn't comment on other aspects of Bisesar's life.

Barry wouldn't, for example, say if or where Bisesar had been working, but did say that "she had quite an impressive resume."

Bisesar had graduated from York University's undergraduate and graduate business programs and worked at several jobs in the financial district.

Barry also said a number of her friends have come forward to say they're shocked about what happened.

The College Park courtroom was packed with people who have been following the high-profile case. Bisesar wore a burgundy sweater to court and spoke to Barry over the prisoner's box.

Bisesar to remain in custody

After Wednesday's appearance, Bisesar will remain in custody, likely at a jail in the Milton, Ont. area, Barry said.

She's set to be back in court Friday, but Barry suggested it may be early January before she gets a bail hearing because the courts are reducing hours during the holidays and Toronto police are dealing with a large number of cases after last week's spike of violent incidents.

The victim suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack and remains in hospital in critical condition.

Bisesar has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon.
