Toronto students and veterans kick off poppy campaign

A group of Canadian war veterans and grade six students from Davisville Public School launched theTTC poppy campaign Friday at Spadinasubwaystation.

Veterans pinned poppies on the students as a reminder toall Torontonians to wear a poppyin honour of the men and women who served Canada.

TTC CEO Andy Byford was on hand to launch the campaign and to hold a moment of silence for sixformer TTCemployees whofought for Canada in the Second World War and died this past year.

Byford also thanked all of the veterans whowere on hand for Friday's ceremony.

"I am so lucky that I've never had to face what you've faced.I am so lucky thatI've never had to endurewhat you've endured, and I can only salute you for yourbravery," said Byford.

Byford said all TTC buses and streetcars will carryasign on Remembrance Day that will read'Lest We Forget.'

A message will run on all platform video screens throughout the subway system, as well.

The TTC Honour Guard will take part in the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph at Old City Hall.

On Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. the TTC will bring all of its vehicles to a halt to remember those who died serving their country during wartime.

All current and former members of Canada's militarywill be able to ride the TTC free of charge with one companion onRemembrance Day.
