Toronto mayor seeks re-election

Toronto city council will return to regular business on Wednesday following the six-week civic workers strike and Mayor David Miller says he's ready to seek another term in office.

Miller said Tuesday he's proud of his accomplishments and will seek re-election in 2010.

"Yes I'm going to run. I'm proud of the track record I have as a mayor of Toronto and I have confidence in Torontonians," said Miller. "They've never let me down when I needed them and I can count on them in the future."

Miller said he's delivering expanded transit service, a cleaner city and new programs to fight poverty.

"Torontonians endorsed a direction in 2006.We've created that direction and there is so much happening in this city, I'm very proud of that," he said.

On Tuesday, the city announced its residential garbage collection service was almost back to normal and that all of its employment and social services offices have been reopened.

In a news release, the city said parking permits and building permits are being issued, building inspections are being done and daycare facilities have reopened.

City council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss more than 200 items.

Community centres and splash pads have reopened.

On Thursday, registration begins for summer camp and swim programs.
