'It's a tie!': Toronto welcomes 2 New Year's babies born at midnight

Twobabies were born in Toronto at midnight as thenew year began, say two Toronto hospitals.

"It's a tie!" Joe Gorman, director of public affairs for Humber River Hospital, said onMonday.

Humber River, along with St. Michael's Hospital, are both claiming the first New Year's Baby in Toronto.

Shiloh Dlamini was born at 12:00:00 a.m. in St. Michael's to mother Hlengiwe Khoza.

"Iwasn't looking at the time but everybody was just saying that this will be a New Year'sbaby. I was in so much pain and I just wanted to get it over with, butwhen I realized that thisreally was a New Year's baby I was so happy," said Khoza.

Shiloh weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces at birth.

Fireworks exploded whenbabies born

In a news release, St. Michael's said the baby girl was born as fireworks were exploding in nearby Nathan Phillips Square.

"When the baby was born I looked out the window and I saw the fireworks. It was so beautiful. I looked at the time and it was 12 at midnight," said Khoza.

"I felt like the fireworks were there for me and the baby," she added.

Meanwhile, Phillip Tijir-Timor was born at 12:00:00 a.m. atHumber Riverto mother Nadira Tijir-Timor.

Phillip weighed four pounds, six ounces at birth.

Phillip is a twin and his sister, Victoria, was born seven seconds later at 12:00:07 a.m. Victoria weighed five pounds, nine ounces at birth.

Both babies were born by c-section.

SergonGawro, father of the twins, said he and his wife are thrilled with the new additions to their family. Their daughter now has a baby brother and sister. The mother of the twins does not speak English.

"We feel great. We feel very happy and very excited," he said on behalf of the couple.

"I want to thank everyone in this hospital. The staff were great."

At Mount Sinai Hospital, three seconds after midnight, another baby was born, the hospital said in a tweet.
