Uber faces crackdown following Toronto city council vote

Police and bylaw officers have been asked to crack down on Uberdrivers while council reviews its regulations when it comes to the taxi business.

Council voted to launch the review days after Mayor John Tory held a high-profile meeting with cab companies, taxi drivers and representatives from Uber the ride-sharing app that has shaken up the ground transportation business in Toronto.

Council wants police to enforce current bylaws to target unlicensed drivers, but it's unclear when officers will begin that work.

Tory reiterated his call for a "fair and level playing field," when it comes to the taxi business on Wednesday, but said Uber should be included in whatever new laws the city comes up with.

City staff is expected to provide council with new regulatory options in September.
