Woman dead, sister injured after being hit by SUV near Bremner and Spadina

A woman is dead and her sister is injured after they were struck by an SUV that jumped the curb near Bremner Boulevard and Spadina Avenue on Tuesday afternoon, paramedics said.

A woman isdead and her sister isinjured afteran SUVjumped the curb near Bremner Boulevard and Spadina Avenue and slammed into a food vendor's tent they were working inon Tuesday afternoon.

Const. Hugh.Smithof Toronto Police told CBC Newsthe woman who died was 38.

Her sister, whois 35, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Smith said.

An eyewitness told CBC News that a black SUV travelling westbound on Bremner Boulevard near the Rogers Centre suddenly accelerated, veered off the street onto the sidewalkand plowed into the vendor's tent.

Smith saidthe sisters are from Toronto and were vendors at a sidewalk bazaarwhich is locateda few metres away from the sidewalk.

The driver of the SUV, a48-year-old woman from Mississauga,wastaken to hospital suffering from shock, he said.

Mayor John Tory said he was saddened by the news of the woman's death, adding that he would renew his call to the provincial government to increasepenalties "for those who kill or injure people while driving."

He said he would alsoaskToronto police to step up their enforcement of distracted anddangerous driving.

In a statement, Tory urged "drivers to slow down, stop aggressive behaviours and storetheir mobile devices. I would also ask cyclists and pedestrians toobey the rules of the road."

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the SUV to jump the curb.

Bremnerwas closed to trafficfrom Navy Wharf Courtto Spadinabut reopened five hours later.
