Bike sharing now available at the university

University of Windsor students now have a bike share program to get them around campus
Moussa Hamadani the University of Windsor student alliance president takes his first ride with bikes from the school's new bike share program.

Students, staff and faculty at the University of Windsor now have a bike share program that can take them all over the city.

The two-year pilot project was a collaboration between the university's student alliance, administration and the alumni association, said Moussa Hamadani, University of Windsor Student Alliance president. They wanted to provide an eco-friendly and inexpensive way for students to travel between campuses.

The cost is split between the three partners, with the student alliance contributing about $100,000, Hamadani said.

"It's a socially responsible decision to bring to campus," Hamadani said.

There are eight bicycle stations with one downtown.

You can use a mobile app, visit the website or text the company to get a code to unlock the bike you want to ride. It will cost $2 per hour for those without a membership. Anyone who signs up gets their first hour free when taking out a bike and then $2 per hour for each additional hour.

Bikes may be taken in during the winter months for maintenance, Hamadani said. They aren't equipped for heavy winter weather.

University students also have a universal bus pass this year.

The bike share program will be evaluated after the two-year pilot is complete.
