Windsor to study worst intersections for cyclists

Studying the four worst intersections for cyclist is a good start, but the city needs to do much more to improve safety for people travelling on bikes, say Bike Windsor Essex members.

Windsor will spend $20,000 studying safety issues at four intersections with the highest number of cyclist collisions, city council agreed Monday.

The intersection at Lauzon Parkway and Tecumseh Road East had the highest number of crashes involving people on bikes with a total of seven incidents between 2011 and 2015.

City staff analyzed500 cyclist collisions in that time frame in order to identify the four hot spots.

Lori Newton with Bike Windsor Essex is not surprised by the numbers. She's glad the city will study the most dangerous intersections, but suggests more could be done to improve safety.

"We would also like to ask they consider doing a pilot in one of those intersections...where we could actually put paint on the road that would indicate to everyone in that roadway, whether they are a motorist, cyclist or pedestrian, where everyone belongs," she said.
