Family launches blood drive in honour of 'hero' Mason Bacon-Macri

The family of Mason Bacon-Macri continues the fight against cancer, well after their four-year-old son's public battle with the disease came to a tragic end last summer.

This Easter weekend, ChantelleandIainBaconare asking residents to donate during the Fight Like Mason Blood Drive. Knowing how valuable blood donations were for their son in his long battle with cancer, the family wants to help others.

"We are so thankful for those who were selfless and donated to help our son," they wrote in a news release. "We've seen first-hand how a blood transfusion can truly save a life - it saved Mason's multiple times and allowed him to have good days in the hardest of times."

Mason was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcomaembryonal cancer a form of the diseasemade up of cells that normally develop into skeletal muscles when he was two. He went through two years of treatments and achieved many victories along the way, but eventually died June 27, 2016.

"In his honour, we started theFight Like Mason Foundationand our goal is to kick cancer's butt for good," the family wrote.

The foundation is teaming up withCanadian Blood Services and holding a blood drive on Friday and Saturday from8 a.m. to noon at the Windsor Blood Donor Clinic on Grand Marais Road East.

After Mason was first diagnosed, the family told him cancer was like having bad men inside his body and he needed to be a super hero and fight them. This led to Mason often being clad in super hero costumes.

That theme continues with the foundation.
