There's a military coverup underway on Windsor's west end and taxpayers are footing the bill.

A mural depicting the Surrender of Detroit is being bricked over and little of the mural remainson the east end of the strip mall behind the old Sandwich post office, at the intersection of Mill and Sandwich streets.

This is what used to adorn the east side of a strip mall on the west side of Mill Street in Windsor's west end. (dalejtravis.com)

Red bricks have been creeping up the wall for at least two days now.

The mural shows Major General Sir Isaac Brock and Chief Tecumseh riding on horseback through cannon smoke and a scroll outlining the final moments of the Battle of Detroit.

Bricklayers working there early Thursday morning said people have been walking past complaining about the work.

It's one of two murals on Mill Street. The other is across the street, on the west wall of the Barrel House Draught Co. and Grill.

According to city documents, the work is being done to "improve the appearance of mixed use and commercial buildings" under the Sandwich Incentive Program.

The re-facing of the existing commercial plaza "is consistent with the vision and goals of the sandwich Community Improvement Plan and the Heritage Conservation District."

City council approved contributing nearly $34,000 to the project once its complete. The decision was made late last year.

The city was also aware the mural would either be removed or covered up.
