LGBTQ foster centre struggling financially

A new social services agency specifically dedicated to providing care for LGBTQ youthis struggling to get financial support.

The provincial government has given approval forthe agency,Five/Fourteen, which helps youth find culturally sensitivefoster care. But the government will not provide any funding to get the agency started.

Five/Fourteen executive director,Lucas Medina remains frustrated in his ongoingsearch for start-up funding.

"I'm someone who grew up in the system, who wants to create what should have been there this whole time," he said.

Five/Fourteen already has youth on a wait, but the organization can't do much until they get some startup capital. Medina says it's been frustrating without government support to get the group started.

"They've said that I'm the right person to do this, and that we have this fantastic program, and they've licensed us," he said. But "good luck getting the startup money, because that's the last obstacle, it's the last hurdle for this whole system."

Five/Fourteen is currently fundraising to try and bring in enough money to start serving clients.
