South Asian community to celebrate 50 years in Windsor

The South Asian Centre of Windsor has chosen this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of people from the Indian sub-continent. There will be a gala in May and a series of video profiles of prominent community members is also being finalized.

Series of events, videos planned to mark historic milestone

Windsor's South Asian community wants to raise its profileas it marks a milestone as it celebrates its 50th anniversary as part of the city.

The South Asian Centre has planned several events over the coming months, highlighting the achievementsof Windsorites of Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi origin. The centre has commissioneda series of videos celebrating prominent community members, which will be shownat a series of community events.

Sushil Jain, president of the centre, says representatives of the community now occupy posts on municipal positions. He adds that the communityhad high hopes one of their own might be elected to city council during the last municipal election. It didn't happen, but it's something he still dreams of.

"The best candidate should win," Jain told CBC News following the inaugural meeting of the centre's women's group. "If we know that there is a leader over there, a person that the community can look towards, it's possible. Anything is possible."

The South Asian Centre's big gala is slated to be held in May.
