Windsor Assembly Plant cleared to reopen after report of explosion

The union representing workers at the Windsor Assembly Plant says the plant has been cleared to reopen after a report of an explosionThursday night.

Unifor Local 444 said on Twitterthat itwasinformed by Stellantis that the plant would be returning to normal business as of midnight, and employees working Fridaywere to report at the usual times.

Windsor police said in a tweet at around 7 p.m. Thursday thatofficers were responding to a report of an explosion.

The tweet also said the explosive disposal unit was going to be on scene to assist in determining a cause.

Police said no injuries had been reported andare asking the public to stay away from the area.

According to the online police log, a fire at the 2100 block of Chrysler Centre was calledin at 5:57 p.m.

In an emailed statement on Friday morning, a spokesperson forStellantissaidtheinvestigation is ongoing.

According to the automaker,an "incident" occurred in the vacant section of the plant on Thursday afternoon. A spokesperson for the company would not clarify the nature of that incident, referring CBC News to the authorities.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the plant was evacuated. The space has since been cleared and employees are expected to report to work at their regularly scheduled time," the company said in its statement.
