Police charge one driver, looking for another, in weekend stunt driving incident

After videos of stunt driving in South Windsor emerged over the weekend, Windsor police now say they have arrested one person.

Police said in a statement Fridayofficers responded just before midnight on April 13 to Wheelton Drive. Once there, officers reported seeing a large number of cars leaving the area and a parked BMW with extensive damage.

"Through investigation, officers obtained video footage which showed an Audi colliding with the BMW at a high rate of speed, causing damage to both vehicles," police said in a media statement.

Policesay they spoke with the driver of the Audi, ordering him to return to the scene. A 21-year-old was arrested on arrival. He was charged with stunt driving.

A video posted to Facebook shows what appears to be a car rally with a large crowdgathered around on Wheelton Drive. At one point in the video, crowds lookon as a black BMWdoesdoughnuts in an intersection, screeching its tires.

A red sedanenters the intersectionand the cars collide severely damaging the front end of onecar, while the red car speeds out of the frame. Tire marks were still visible on the pavement Monday morning.

Ward 9 Coun. Kieran McKenzie, who represents the area,said he would ask city staff to bring forward some information about technology in place in other cities to tackle the issue, like automated noise radar.

"Windsor's not unique in terms of having stunt driving being an issue that we're dealing with," McKenzie said earlier this week. "But still I think there's some merit in us turning our minds towardwhat else could we do to try to make our streets safer and and to try to curtail some of that, some of what's disturbing our residents."

Police say they are still investigating the identity of the BMW driver and ask anyone with information to contact the traffic enforcement unit or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous.
