Consultant hired to review Windsor's taxi bylaws

The review is part of the city's push to regulate ride-sharing services, such as Uber.

Officials from Taxi Research Partners Ltd.confirmed they will review the City of Windsor's publicvehicles bylaw.

The review is part of the city's push to regulate ride-sharing services, such as Uber.

City council confirmed it will spend up to $30,000 for the review, which is anticipated to take about three months to complete.Mayor DrewDilkenshas said he wantsthe consultantto find ways to regulate ride-sharing services.

"At the end of the day, it's figuring out that pathway that allows ride-sharing services like Uber to operate legally in the City of Windsor, but also looking at our bylaws with respect to taxis and seeing if there's a way to make it more efficient and easier and reducingthe red tape with respect to taxis," he said.

About a month ago,Windsor bylaw officers started cracking down on Uber drivers who are in contravention of its bylaws. Nearly $8,000 in fines had been handed out to about 20 Uber drivers during the month of January.
