Adele, One Direction big winners at BRIT Awards

Adele, One Direction and The Black Keys were among the winners at last night's BRIT Awards, an annual event celebrating the U.K. music industry.

  • British breakthrough act: Calvin Harris
  • British female solo artist: Emeli Sand
  • British group: Mumford & Sons
  • Critics' choice award: Tom Odell
  • International female solo artist: Lana Del Ray
  • International group: The Black Keys
  • British album of the year: Emeli Sand- Our Version of Events
  • International male solo artist: Frank Ocean
  • British single: Adele - Skyfall

Adele, who was in Los Angeles rehearsing for Sunday's Academy Awards, took home the prize for British Single for her James Bond theme, Skyfall.

Emeli Sand, the spikey-haired chanteuse who was featured at the opening ceremony for the London Games, earned two awardsbest female solo artist and best album for Our Version of Events.

Boy band One Direction won in the new Global Success category and performed their cover of the 1979 song One Way or Another during the televised show at the London O2 arena.

Justin Timberlake, clad in a Tuxedo and bowtie,gave the first public performance ofhis single Mirrors.

International artists were honoured at the awards, with several American acts taking home prizes. Frank Ocean, who was among the big winners at last week's Grammys, was named top international male artist, whileLana Del Ray was named international female solo artist.

Ohio rock band The Black Keys won for best international group.

The award winners are selected by members of the British record industry's trade association, with some decided by public voting.
