Carla Bruni shares spotlight with Metallica on British TV

Singer Carla Bruni, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, tapped her foot to the music of Metallica on a BBC music show Wednesday evening.

Bruni, who has said she will not play live concerts while her husband is in office, also performed on the U.K. music show Later...with Jools Holland.

She sang the songs Tu Es Ma Came and L'Amoureuse, or The Woman in Love, from her recent album and accompanied host Jools Holland on a version of the blues number Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out.

In addition to heavy metal kings Metallica, Bruni shared the spotlight with U.K. rapper Sway, New Jersey singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins and British pop newcomer VV Brown.

Holland questioned Bruni about how she manages her career in light ofher husband's high-profile job.

"I don't really mix them up I separate them," she replied. "I play my music and then I go with my husband when he needs me.

"It's like I just try to be with him and be cool about it and not change everything I know and my way of living," she added. "It's not so hard. It's just like playing in a film."

Bruni admitted she sometimes keeps her husband awake by playing music in the middle of the night.

"He's not really a critic or a fan, but he's involved in my music because I play all night long and I disturb him with it in the middle of the night," she said.

"But he's very kind and he listens to all my doubts," she added.

Tu Es Ma Came, a song from her third album Comme Si De Rien N'Etait, which is abestseller in France,is "about a love addiction ... being addicted to someone in a toxic way," Bruni said.

Questioned whether she had ever been in that situation, the singer who has had a string of high-profile romances replied: "Yes indeed."

Her appearance on the music show came days after she met with Pope Benedict XVI and months after meetings with the Queen and the Dalai Lama.

The BBC reported thatthe biggest cheer of the evening was for Metallica, who played their 1991 hit Enter Sandman.
