During that time, Rain performed myriad Shakespearean roles includingClaudio in Measure for Measure, Malvolioin Twelfth Night, Iago in Othello and Ulysses inTroilusand Cressida.

One of his most notable stage roles was inHenry V, in which he played the title character. The rendition was adapted for television in 1966.

"Canadian theatre has lost one of its greatest talents and a guiding light in its development," said the Stratford Festival's artistic director Antoni Cimolinoin a statement, adding Rain was "an actor deeply admired by other actors."
