Frears, Costa-Gavras movies added to Berlin lineup

New movies starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones and Demi Moore have been added to the competition lineup at 59th Berlin Film Festival, organizers said Thursday.

Pfeiffer plays a courtesan worried about her age, in Cheri, a film based on a novel by Colette directed by Stephen Frears, the British director who helmed The Queen.

Jones and John Goodman appear in a French-American co-production In the Electric Mist, by Bertrand Tavernier.

The murder mystery follows a Louisiana detective whose murder investigation is disrupted by surreal encounters with Confederate troops.

U.S. director Mitchell Lichtenstein's Happy Tears, starring Moore and Parker Posey, is about sisters who return home to care for their ailing and difficult father.

Also bringing films to Berlin are Oscar-winning Greek director ConstantinCosta-Gavras with Eden is West and Poland's Andrzej Wajda with Sweet Rush.

Organizers of the Berlin Film Festival, to run Feb. 5-15, have announced 25 of the 26 films in competition for the Golden Bear.

The festival opens with The International, starring Clive Owen as an Interpol agent and Naomi Watts as a New York attorney who risk their lives in trying to investigate a bank's business which includes financing wars and terror.

British actress Tilda Swinton, who won the Academy Award for best supporting actress last year for her performance as a shifty lawyer in Michael Clayton, will be jury president.

Also added to the lineup:

  • About Elli from Iran's Asghar Farhadi.
  • Little Soldier from Denmark's Annette Oleson.
  • The Milk of Sorrow from Peru's Claudia Llosa.

Notorious, a biopic about rapper Notorious B.I.G., and German compilation film Deutscheland 09 will screen out of competition.
