Junos moving to a Monday to avoid Oscar night

The 2023 Juno Awards are moving a day later to steer clear of the Oscars. Organizers at the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences say next year's show in Edmonton will shift to March 13, from its original date of March 12.

The 2023 Juno Awards are moving a day later to steer clear of Oscars night.

Organizers at the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences say next year's show in Edmonton will shift to March 13, from its original date of March 12.

The decision comes after CARAS was faced with the prospect of the Junos competing for viewers with the Academy Awards.

Moving one night means the show will unfold on a Monday instead of its usual Sunday celebration.

"This new date will provide greater access to a wider audience and give Canadian artists the attention their extraordinary works deserves," the Junos said in a statement.

In May, the Junos revealed plans for next year's show only to learn a few days later the Academy Awards booked the same night.

The Junos then had to consider changing their original date while navigating the hockey and event schedule at Rogers Place, where the evening is set to take place.

Organizers say plans for other events tied to the Junos, including the usual awards gala dinner where most trophies are given out, will be announced at a future date.

The Junos air live on CBC and stream on CBC Gem. This is only the second time the music event has been held in Edmonton. The first was in 2004 when Alanis Morissette played host.
