Al-Jazeera English journalist Mohamed Fahmy, who remains in Egypt on bail while awaiting trial on terror charges, has signed a book deal.

Fahmy, a naturalized Canadian born in Egypt, and two other journalists were arrested in 2013 and charged with being part of a terrorist group and airing falsified footage intended to damage national security.

Al-Jazeera is based in Qatar, a main backer of ousted president Mohammed Morsi's outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.

The journalists insist they were just doing their job by covering pro-Islamist protests, and human rights organizations and media groups have criticized the trial.

Fahmy has also criticized Canada for not doing enough to win his release.

Australian journalist Peter Greste, also charged in the case, was deported in February.

Random House Canada is the publisher.
