Stephen Colbert has landed one of Hollywood's biggest names as his first guest on CBS' Late Show this fall: George Clooney.

The late-night host proudly tweeted Friday that the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker will be his "first-ever" guest when he officially steps into David Letterman's recently vacated chair on September 8.

Colbert's news arrived just hours after he helped his Comedy Central predecessor Jon Stewart bid an emotional farewell to The Daily Show Thursday night.

The late-night landscape has undergone a dramatic shift and prolonged transition period in recent years, with one generation of hosts including Jay Leno, David Letterman and Stewart stepping aside for a raft of younger faces, including Jimmy Fallon, Colbert, Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel.
