Troubled British singer Amy Winehouse was charged with assault on Friday for allegedly hitting a fan last September.

The 25-year-old is scheduled to appear in a Londoncourt on March 17 overan incident at the End of Summer Ball, a 700 ($1,275 Cdn) a ticketfundraising concert in London on Sept. 26, 2008,the Guardian newspaper reported.

Dancer Sherene Flash has been quoted in London newspapers as saying she was hit in the eye by Winehouse after she asked if she could take her picture at the ball.

The singer's spokesman, Chris Goodman, said Winehouse, recently back from a two-month vacation in St. Lucia, went voluntarily to a police station in London where she was charged with common assault and released on bail.

Winehouse won five Grammy awards for her 2006 album, Back to Black, which includedher popular hit songRehab, but her battles with drug and alcohol addiction and run-ins with the law have overshadowed her successes.

In January, her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, began divorce proceedings against her.

Last year, health complications threatened both her life and her career.
