Just how connected to the online world are Canadian kids? A new survey might surprise you.

More than one-third of Canadian teens and pre-teens now sleep with their cellphones, a new report from a digital and media literacy group reveals.

The non-profit organization MediaSmarts surveyed more than 5,000 Canadian students in Grades 4 to 11 about their online habits for the Young Canadians in a Wired World study.

The study said that 25 per cent of Grade 4 students now have their own cellphone.

Among the most-visited sites for young people were social networking services like Facebook and Twitter, CBC's Briar Stewart reports. Even so, fewer parents are setting rules about visiting sites and posting personal information.
