Vine micro-video app launched by Twitter

Microblogging service Twitter has officially launched a new video sharing app called Vine that also deals in bite-sized morsels.

Microblogging service Twitter has officially launched a new video sharing app called Vine that also deals in bite-sized morsels.

"Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (six seconds or less) inspires creativity," wrote Michael Sippey, Twitter's vice-president of product, in a blog post announcing the launch Thursday.

"Now that you can easily capture motion and sound, we look forward to seeing what you create."

The brief videos loop automatically and can be posted on Vine, Twitter and Facebook. All posted videos are visible to all Vine users.

According to Apple, Vine is Twitter's first app since its original Twitter app.

It is available as a free download for iPhone and iPod touch at Apple's App Store.

Twitter, a popular social networking tool that allows people to broadcast messages of 140 characters or less, reportedly acquired New York City-based Vine last October.

Dom Hofmann, co-founder and general manager of Vine, confirmed the acquisition in a blog post Thursday.

However, he said a Twitter account is not required to use Vine.
