Bomb disposal experts destroyed a suspicious package returned by the French Embassy to a delivery service in central Athens following a spate of mail bombings that targeted embassies and European leaders.

The latest package was destroyed by controlled explosion Thursday.

Police said it was not immediately clear whether the package contained explosives.

Two suspected members of a radical left-wing group based in Greece were arrested Monday in connection with attacks on Monday and Tuesday involving 13 mail bombs. One package reached the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

Court documents seen by The Associated Press accuse the two men, ages 22 and24,of assembling thebombs using tiny amounts of crude explosive materials concealed in hollowed-out books.

The two suspects, one a college student and the other his unemployed friend, were both formally remanded in pretrial prison custody Thursday.
