Sun Record founder Phillips dies

Sam Phillips, the record label owner who discovered Elvis Presley, died Wednesday at the age of 80.

Phillips died in Memphis at St. Francis Hospital. The cause of death is not known.

After founding Sun Records in 1952, Phillips introduced Presley's first record. It included the songs That's All Right, Mama and Blue Moon of Kentucky.

In 1956, he sold Presley's contract to RCA for $35,000.

Phillips also helped launch the careers of Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Charlie Rich and Roy Orbison.

Sun Records' motto was "We Record Anything, Anywhere, Anytime."

Phillips was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
