Meeting a Muppet - Things That Go Pop!

Meeting a Muppet

It's not every day you get to meet one of your childhood heroes.

But on Tuesday, I had a chance to chat with the green wonder himself, Kermit the Frog. Kermit is doing the rounds, out banging the drum for his new movie The Muppets.

In a swank Toronto hotel, Kermit and his human co-star Jason Segel sat down to talk about getting the gang back together for their sixth and long overdue big-screen adventure.

I entered the room with directions to "keep my eyes on the frog." We had a brief chat about who will be the audience for the new Muppet movie, his "visceral" relationship with Miss Piggy and missing his old friend Jim Henson.

It might seem strange to ask a foam frog about his creator, but with the Muppets the past is always present. From the days of disco to the mp3, Kermit, Fozzie and Miss Piggy have remained pretty much the same characters so many of us grew up with. That's part of the Muppet charm, it's that old-fashioned silliness - a little bit of vaudeville mixed with the Borscht Belt - that sets them apart.

Off-stage creators have come and gone, and even with this new movie not all of the Muppet family are on board.

Still, for someone who considers Fozzie his spirit animal, it was special just to see the way Kermie handled mundane media interviews. The little quirks, the way he nods, or squishes the top of his head when asked an uncomfortable question, it all seems so...human.

The new Muppets movie heads to theates on Nov. 23.

Oh, and if you're wondering if the Muppets still have it, check out their brilliant spoof of the recent trailer to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
