A taste of The Hunger Games - Things That Go Pop!

A taste of The Hunger Games

Full disclosure: I am a Hunger Games junkie. Not just one who read the books and loved them, but the kind who pushed the books onto friends, family and co-workers: 100% cult member status. So, like every one of my fellow HG uberfans, I've been eating up every little morsel of news from the upcoming movie, slated for release in March.

And now, after an earlier teaser spot, an official trailer for The Hunger Games has arrived.

***Spoiler Alert***

This is a good trailer, a solid trailer. I see what Lionsgate was trying to do here: please the fans. The producers wanted to show off their (pretty decent) casting. Katniss, Gale, Peeta, Rue, Cinna, Effie, Haymitch and President Snow are all in this. They want to show off the world of Panem and all the little details that come before the Big Game. But is this a great trailer? No.

In my humble opinion, this trailer suffers from an acute case of TMI: Too. Much. Information. Yet it's not necessarily the right information, nor in the right order. The trailer needed to get across three things. First: the desperation of Katniss, her best friend Gale and the people that inhabit their world. Second: that the stakes of the Hunger Games are life or death. Third: this fight is going to get grimy and violent real fast.

Though it contained a few choice moments, the trailer missed the mark for me. It was all too bright. The music didn't blow my mind. The tone and even the lighting were simply not dark enough. Where is the danger? The hunger? The hopelessness? The brutality of being forced to kill your friends? If I didn't already know the story, this trailer would not make me want to. While this won't necessarily reflect on the finished film itself -- which BETTER BE GOOD or there will be hell to pay -- in the trailer I was craving some of the raw grittiness from the printed page, especially to hook the people who don't already know and love the story.

Have you seen the awesome Japanese movie Battle Royale? It has similar plot points as The Hunger Games: dystopian future, teenagers dropped onto an island for battle to the death and the whole thing televised for the entertainment of the nation. Now THIS is a badass trailer (Warning: graphic violence), even with the subtitles.

Battle Royale came out more than 10 years ago, but Lionsgate needs to watch this. And the next Hunger Games trailer needs to blow us all away. No pressure!
