George Takei makes a plea for star peace

George Takei, the 74-year-old actor best known for playing officer Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek TV series and films, has waded into the debate over the merits of his franchise vs. Star Wars with a plea for peace. In a new online video, he replays the battle of words between Star Trek's William Shatner and Carrie Fisher of Star War, urging unity on both sides.

Why? Because Takei believes there's a mutual foe threatening the universe -- one that lacks the heroism, camaraderie and epic battles of both Star Wars and Star Trek. He's speaking, naturally, of high school-attending vampires who sparkle and a lovestruck heroine whose message is not "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi," but rather "I wonder if my boyfriend really likes me?"

This online campaign may just be preparing the ground troops for the re-release of Star Wars in 3D next year, but it's hard not to fall for it. Live long and prosper, sci-fi fans.
