George R. R. Martin is such a tease

Kit Harington as Jon Snow in the HBO series based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy novels. (HBO Canada)

What author could be so excited about his new book that he releases a brand new chapter online - with no clear answer on when the whole book will come out? Who does this? Apparently, fantasy god George R. R. Martin does. Something you can do when millions of fans are salivating over any new scrap from the vast world you have created from scratch. Pretty badass if you ask me.

Check out the new chapter from The Winds of Winter - book six of Martin's masterful A Song of Ice and Fire series. And don't be put off by Martin's terrible website - just print it off in Word like all the other tech snobs like me.

Now read on if you are already one of the converted. Because I'm pretty sure the world is divided between those who have read (and therefore love) Martin's series, and those who haven't. There's no real grey area. Just read the tumblr Winter is Coming, Bitches.

If you are a true fan, you will die laughing. If you aren't, you'll be terribly confused. So if you are as deeply immersed in and obsessed by this world as I am, read on!

*Spoiler Alert*

I love that this new excerpt is about Theon Greyjoy, one of Martin's best characters. I say that not because I like the man, but because he is one of the most complex citizens of Westeros. You've rooted for him. You've rooted against him. You've been shocked by him. You've hated him with a passion. You've pitied him. And then you rooted for him once more. Only a truly gifted writer can pull that off.

Theon is the kind of thorny character that moves the story forward by equal parts action and psychosis - and that's what makes him so fascinating. And even more fascinating now that he remembers his name and is not afraid to die for the crimes and secrets that will most likely die with him.

Although I was hoping for a bit of news on Jon Snow, or fan fave Tyrion (apparently Martin's proxy in the story), I will gladly take Stannis being smart for a change, Asha going back to her gangster self and the Karstarks getting their just desserts. As for Theon, he does indeed deserve to die. But I'd much rather see the Bastard of Bolton (don't call him that to his face) dead first.

Who knows how long we'll have to wait though. With Martin, release dates are nebulous at best, untrustworthy at worst. He took five years to release book five A Dance with Dragons. Not that I'm complaining! I refuse to be one of those ungrateful fans who gripe and moan about waiting. When something is this good, it's worth the wait.

And that's why Martin is such a tease. A brilliant, brilliant tease.

How excited are you for The Winds of Winter? Then again, I actually wouldn't mind if Martin took his sweet time. After all, book six will be inevitably followed by book seven, which means the end of the series. And potentially the end of life as we know it. Overstatement? Maybe. BUT MAYBE NOT.

Fellow geeks, please share your thoughts on the new material!

And while we're at it, any thoughts on the new casting news for HBO's season two of Game of Thrones? I'm AMPED.
